  • Lake Buchanan

    shores of quartz

Lake Buchanan, just over an hour northwest of Austin, is over 16 miles long and up to 5 miles wide.

The largest and northernmost of the Highland Lakes in the Texas Hill Country sits over 1000 feet above sea level with more that 120 miles of shoreline. These beautiful shores of quartz and granite sand beaches, granite and limestone rocky points and clear blue waters are surrounded by wildflowers, oaks, cedars, and rolling hills.

The Colorado River flowing into Lake Buchanan glides through 15 miles of pristine valleys and canyons past undeveloped ranchland. Along the canyon shores are 4 unique waterfalls and cliffs where bald eagles soar November through March. Only 60 miles northwest of Austin, Lake Buchanan is still an open un-crowded Hill Country playground for boating, fishing, sailing, swimming, observing nature or just relaxing on the clean quartz sand beaches.

ACCESS/CAMPING: There are 10 good boat ramps, 4 on the east (Burnet) side and 6 on the west (Llano) side. The east side has a free ramp at the Burnet County Park as well as 3 private ramps where you can launch your boat for $5. The west side has a newly renovated free ramp at the Llano County Park and 5 private ramps at resorts that charge a $5 fee. Unimproved ramps are available at Cedar Point Recreation Area and Colorado Bend State Park.

Camping is available at Colorado Bend State Park, Cedar Point Recreation Area, Black Rock Park. The many private resorts on Lake Buchanan and nearby Buchanan Dam offer lodging, RV/camping sites, fishing piers and waterfront lake homes.

The Lake Buchanan area is home of 2 of the 22 Texas Hill Country wineries. As well as nearby art galleries, shops, restaurants, Longhorn Cavern State park and Enchanted Rock State Park. For more details check the Lake Buchanan-Inks Lake Chamber of Commerce website.
