Boerne, a treasure nestled in the magnificent setting of the Texas Hill Country

Boerne

History:

Boerne (pronounced Bernie) was formally established by German pioneer settlers in 1851, and named for German poet and publicist Ludwig Bӧrne. However, Bӧrne never visited the city named after him.The Benedictine Sisters Convent, founded in 1911, is located in Boerne. The Kronkosky Tower is located on their grounds and is now used as a prayer space by Omega Retreatants. The tower provides breathtaking views of both Boerne and the surrounding Hill Country. It is free to visit.

Recreational and Relaxing Activities:

Boerne is well known for their historic Boerne Market Square lined with shops and diners. Every second weekend of the month year round they host “Boerne Market Days”. Vendors from all over the Hill Country travel to sell and buy unique, handmade goods such as wood carvings, tasty bar-b-que, and art. The schedule for upcoming Market Days can be found here: http://www.boernemarketdays.com/boerne.html

Many German restaurants are scattered along the Guadalupe river, which runs straight through the town. Grab a bite to eat and then spend a couple hours in the sunshine feeding ducks or fishing.

Nature:

The Guadalupe river makes its way through the heart of Boerne, TX. There are paved walkways wound along the river’s edge to provide easy access to the beauty of this historical river. This area is a good alternative to the Riverwalk in San Antonio, TX, as it is much less crowded but still within walking distance of several restaurants and bars.

In and around the area, fishermen find fortunes in Hill Country lakes and streams.

Hunters seek white-tailed and axis deer, wild boar, turkey, native and migratory game birds. Kronkosky Hill Located in Boerne, the Kronkosky Tower and grounds are home to the Benedictine Sisters’Monastery and their Ministries.

Please visit https://tpwd.texas.gov/regulations/outdoor-annual/regs/animal_listing for more information on hunting seasons in Boerne.

The Hill Country is made up of many small towns connected by beautiful scenic drives. There are gorgeous Hill Country landscapes in almost any direction. Scenic drives are a favorite pastime for many locals, especially during sunset. So crank those windows down, turn up the radio, and fly over those hills!

popular tourist destinations Kerrville, Fredericksburg, and Bandera are just a short drive from Boerne. In 1917, the Texas Department of Transportation began the “Wildflower Program” (https://www.txdot.gov/inside-txdot/division/maintenance/wildflower-program.html) which planted thousands of pounds of wildflower seeds along the highways of Texas. They are maintained today, making main highway drives over the hills in the spring and summer breathtakingly colorful.
