Fredericksburg was founded in 1846 by German immigrants. Today, the historic town boasts a population of 10,530 residents and has spectacular views of the Texas Hill Country. Fredericksburg retained much of its German history. Many of the older buildings have kept their original German styles. In fact, the town’s original inhabitants refused to speak English and founded a new dialect called “Texas German”. The history of Fredericksburg is rich. The town has many exciting places to stay and many more things to do.
History buffs will enjoy a day at one of the town’s historical sites, including Fort Martin Scott, Pioneer Museum Complex or they can visit the nearby Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site.
Throughout the year, Fredericksburg has many festivities that anyone can enjoy. The Gillespie County Fair has been a town treasure for the last 124 years and starts at the end of August. The Texan fair boasts a slew of events including: live music, livestock exhibits, food, antique tractor shows and so much more. Guest chefs will cook up some amazing Texas cuisines and attendees will enjoy live music all night long. Be sure to visit our Calendar of Events.
Visitors to the town can spend an evening at one of the spectacular bed and breakfasts. Many of these B&Bs are actually historic houses and buildings that have been converted into places for visitors to stay. If a bed and breakfast is not your cup of tea, there are many hotels, cabins, and RV parks and campgrounds. These options allow visitors to enjoy everything Fredericksburg has to offer in comfort.
Shopping is one of the town’s main attractions, with over 150 stores that sell a range of items from handmade jewelry, home decor, artwork and so much more. In addition to shopping, folks can enjoy a relaxing time at a spa or enjoy a round of golf.
Fredericksburg is home to many wineries that are nestled on Hwy 290 East. Many of these wineries will make any wine connoisseur’s day.
