      Inks Lake

      Four Seasons of Great Escapes

Inks Lake is the second of the Highland Lakes, just below the original Buchanan Dam.

At just 831 acres, it is the smallest lake in the chain, but it is also perhaps the most scenic, and public access is easily available through the immensely popular Inks Lake State Park (covering most of the east side of the lake). On the west side is the renowned (and picturesque) Camp Longhorn, founded in 1939 by UT swimming legend Tex Robertson and operated today by his family.

Inks Lake and Inks Dam (completed in 1938) were named for Llano’s colorful mayor, Roy B. Inks, who also served on the original LCRA board. In addition to his public offices, Inks owned the local Ford dealership, and his family’s ranch included Enchanted Rock before it became a state natural area. As a sales promotion in 1929, he drove a new Model A Ford to the top of Enchanted Rock!

Inks Lake State Park is ideal for family recreation, with excellent facilities for camping, hiking, nature education, fishing, boating, swimming, etc. Devil’s Water Hole, at the north end of the park, is one of the Hill Country’s favorite swimming holes, and features excellent cliff-jumping opportunities for more adventurous visitors. There are several other quality lodgings on both sides of the lake, and other area attractions like Circle H Lodge and Falkenstein Castle (two of the state’s top wedding venues) and Longhorn Cavern State Park overlook the lake from the surrounding hills.

Several creeks flow into Inks Lake, forming secluded inlets in scenic canyons. Hiking trails in the state park feature hilltop views and shady forests. The towns of Burnet, Marble Falls and Kingsland are just a few minutes’ drive from the park, and Llano is about 25 minutes to the west.
