Alvin C. Copeland, Sr opened “Chicken on the Run” in Arabi, a suburb of New Orleans, serving traditional Southern fried chicken. A few months later he reopens the restaurant as “Popeyes” named after Popeye Doyleof the movie the French Connection.
This time he chooses spicy New Orleans Style Chicken and the rest is history. After adding buttermilk biscuits in 1983, they become an immediate success. The following year the successful business opens in Toronto, Canada and within two years Popeyes finds it’s opening their 500th restaurant in Maryland competing with others on a national level and quickly becomes the number 3 fast food chicken chain.
The company continues to grow and in 1992 the chain is purchased by AFC Enterprises (America’s Favorite Chicken Company) who also purchased Church’s Chicken. They start to do a facelift and giving Popeye’s a new image they find the company opening their 1000th location and receiving awards such as the “MenuMasters Award” for Louisiana Legends over rice dishes.
In the 2000s Popeye’s is now serving Crawfish and introduces Butterfly Shrimp to the menu which quickly become a huge success. They introduce “Annie” for the first time on national television boasting the slogan “Louisiana Fast”
Soon the Popeye’s Foundation announces partnership to the ProStart program to develop the next generation of food-zealot restaurants.
Popeye’s opened in Kerrville in September 2012 with open arms by the community. Stop in and say hi, you will most certainly be back again and again.
